Controlling Myopia
We understand that more children are developing myopia. If a parent is myopic, the chances of their children being myopic is greater than 50%. And, the likely hood is that they will end up more myopic than their parent.
While glasses and soft contact lenses can correct the condition, until now, they have been unable to slow its rate of progression. This also reduces the chance of developing high levels of myopia (-6.00D or more) which is associated with an increased risk of eye diseases associated with short-sightedness such as retinal detachment and glaucoma.
There are 3 types of lens that have been shown to significantly slow the rate of myopia progression (by 40% to 60 %) in most children
- ‘Nocturnal’ ortho-k lenses
- These are worn at night, leaving the child with perfect vision by day but without having to wear lenses or spectacles to school. This can be popular with younger children who might not be able to look after the lenses by day, for example if they need cleaned when away from home. Click here for more info
- Multifocal Monthly Disposables
- Lenses which are worn by day and replaced on a monthly basis, so require cleaning and storage each night.
